Ex-CIDER-ing New Bottles!

It seems like cider is popping up everywhere lately. The nuances of new quality ciders on the market are taking the flavor experience way past too-sweet Woodchuck to a new, sophisticated place. Given its fresh taste and gluten free status, cider is asserting itself as the new beer. Here’s a field guide to our store’s selection of ciders from around the globe.

Clos Normand Brut French Fermented Cider, $10

From the ample hills of Normandy comes the complex French country cider Clos Normand. With a bit more carbonation than most ciders, this cork-top bottle cleanses the palate with each sip which allows it to pair beautifully with most foods. I did recently return from one of my more adventurous trips in Ibiza, Spain and then to Scotland and England. Instead of going to a show, I worked the field so to speak and visited manufactures and stores getting inspiration from the country and the Farm Shops of England.

One of the more interesting stops was the Island of Mull and visiting the Island Bakery home to our well cherished Lemon Melts among other sweet biscuits. The Isle of Mull or Mull is on the west coast of Scotland and is fairly large island with a population of only about 2,800  people.  Getting there is a bit of an ordeal, which I in the past never made the time for.  Ferries leave from the pretty and remote seaside town of Oban, a small resort town on the coast of Scotland. Ferries sail to the many inner and outer Hebrides Islands. Mull is closer and about one hour by ferry, and particularly in good weather the light off the water makes for some outstanding views.

Warning: this recipe may turn you into a morning person.

Recently, we exhibited at the Fancy Food Show where we promoted Hasslacher’s ($12.95), our drinking chocolate brick from Colombia. We wanted participants to enjoy the rich, creamy chocolate despite the extreme heat of New York on a summer day. That’s when CMB owner David Porat had the great idea to blend it with Grady’s Cold Brew to create a fabulous mocha smoothie. We’ve made it every morning since!

Here’s our recipe for the Perfect Frozen Mocha. The key here is the quality of the ingredients: pure bean to bar Colombian chocolate, handcrafted cold brew concentrate with chicory and spices, and British golden syrup produced the same way since 1881. [continue reading…]
