Being native New Yorkers, it’s not surprising that pizza is one of our all-time favorite foods. With a pizzeria on almost every corner, serving everything from deathly delicious, deep fried slices to pies with toppings like smoked salmon and caviar; it has caused us to really branch out from our ‘plain-slice’ comfort zone. I recently traveled to Cologne, Germany for the International Confection Market Show (ISM), a huge show for European sweets and snacks. There I discovered two companies from Ireland that we are testing now in our store. Both brands are exported to many countries but neither can be found in the USA until now!  The Melting Pot company was started in Belfast by three sisters. Broderick’s  is from Dublin, the capital of Ireland and started by two brothers. We are celebrating chocolate in our store in February and looking at ways that the celebration can include wine and beer. Chocolate & wine and chocolate & beer is not so different from cheese & wine, and cheese & beer. Beer is often a much easier pairing than chocolate and wine, and it is also usually less expensive. Chocolate generally goes well with products that have some sweetness about them, but wine that is sweet is often poorly regarded. The challenge of combining wine with chocolate is apparent when you finish your last bit of dry red wine with your first bite of dessert and the two tastes collide in your mouth- but not in a good way.
